Timothy Corrigan On: Designing Gracious Bedroom Details (2024)

Whether it’s in his own bedroom in California, above, or in his guest bedrooms at his homes in France, designer Timothy Corrigan believes that comfortable elegance is all in the details. Leslie Hendrix Wood, long an admirer of his design work, arranged for me to interview Timothy about the details of gracious living during his recent visit to Houston’s Decorative Center.

Tim was a keynote panelist at the Decorative Center of Houston’s 2014 Spring Market and later, I visited with him in the Schumacher showroom, where he graciously met with Houston designers who came to see his sumptuously beautiful new line of textiles for Schumacher { one of which is shown below } and where he signed his new book, Chateau du Grand – Luce, about the restoration of his home in the Loire Valley in France, which has 14 guest bedrooms – each decorated differently – and which, of course, also contains Tim’s own grand, light filled { Grand – Luce } master bedroom, shown below.

One of the 14 guest bedrooms in Tim’s chateau is this one. Look at the cushions on the sofa. Don’t they look plump and inviting? Notice the warm throw over the arm’s edge..and the simplicity and elegance of the window treatments. Would you like to see a before picture of this room? Keep scrolling, you won’t believe it.

But, first, here’s a picture of the entire room from Architectural Digest { photo: Eric Piasecki }. I love that Tim interviewed Eric on Timothy’s own blog, here. That kind of gracious thoughtfulness – giving credit to others like Eric, who have made Tim’s design work look so beautiful – is what makes Tim such a gentleman.

Here’s a before picture of the window elevation of this bedroom, provided by Tim to Architectural Digest. { To see the entire before and after slideshow, click on the picture}. Isn’t the transformation that a great interior designer can effect, stunning? And, like Leslie Hendrix Wood, Timothy Corrigan has no formal design training, but they both have that innate eye, that you are either born with or not, for proportion, symmetry, balance and harmony.

What were some of Tim’s tips for the gracious details he incorporates in his bedroom designs? , Two of my favorites that you’ll hear about in my video interview with him at the end of this post, are detailed for you below.

THE UNDER BED TV LIFT

Tim told me he often designs bedrooms with this TV lift that slides out, by remote control, from under the bed, and stops at a preset position in front of the bed. It also rotates 180 degrees so it can be viewed if you’re sitting in other areas of your room. This TV lift can accommodate up to a 50″ TV screen and is made by California based: http://auton.com. At approx. 23,000.00, it is for the luxury interior design clients that Leslie and Tim both serve, but isn’t it wonderful?

THEREFRIGERATEDMEDICINE CABINET FOR THE BATHROOM

Tim also shared with me that he often specifies this medicine cabinet from Robern that has a refrigerated section { you can see it in the picture below, on the right } to keep delicate facial cream ingredients safe and/or he it can also hold water bottles and snacks for overnight guests.

This struck me as a brilliant idea for both younger guests, who might disturb others in the home who are sleeping if they go to the kitchen in the middle of the night, or for elderly guests or parents, who may not feel safe walking to the kitchen in the middle of the night, in an unfamiliar home where there could be rugs or objects to bump into or possibly trip over. Do you agree, Hadley Court readers?

And, lastly, what would we give Tim if he were a guest of ours? He shared in his video interview that he is a voracious reader, so we would gift him with one of our own favorite ideas for a guest bedroom, a custom bookmark, with his name engraved in script on one side, and the Hadley Court stamp embossed on the other. If your guests love books, too, Hadley Court readers, this is a gracious detail they will cherish having to remind them of the memories of their visit to your home.

Mrs. John L. Strong Stationers, in New York City, makes these, which can be customized.

Also, if you will be in Los Angeles this week for the La Cienega Design Event, Legends of La Cienega, don’t miss seeing the beautiful window that Tim has designed. All of the windows for this major design event have been designed around the theme and plot lines of famous literary novels.
