Tesla is reportedly preparing to launch the third generation of its home battery pack, Powerwall 3, according to information obtained by Electrek. Since introducing the first Powerwall in 2015, Tesla's residential energy storage systems have become an integral part of the company's energy division, with each subsequent iteration improving upon its predecessor.

Tesla's Certification Process for Powerwall 3

Electrek reports that Tesla has applied for certification with some electric utilities for Powerwall 3, indicating that the launch may be imminent. Though the specifications and features of the new product are not yet available, last year's internal meeting at Tesla highlighted three main upgrades: easier installations, better aesthetics, and higher performance.

The upcoming Powerwall 3 is expected to maintain the same 13.5kWh energy capacity as the current Powerwall 2. However, the new unit will boast a higher peak backup power of 15.4kW compared to the 10kW offered by its predecessor, according to Drive Tesla Canada. One of the most significant changes to the new battery pack is the switch from lithium NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt) cells to Prismatic LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) cells, which will make Powerwall 3 cheaper to produce.

What to Expect: Upgrades in Design, Performance, and Installation

Regarding design, Powerwall 3 resembles the current Powerwall 2 but with a smaller form factor. The new unit will be approximately 5 inches shorter and 25% narrower than its predecessor. Made of die-cast aluminum, Powerwall 3 will utilize weld sealing rather than adhesive sealing for its enclosure. While the exact dimensions and visuals are not yet available, the changes suggest a more refined and sleek appearance for the Powerwall 3.

Tesla has not yet announced pricing for the new product, but its launch is expected to occur soon, given that some electric utilities have already certified Powerwall 3. The current Powerwall 2 sells for $9,200 for a single unit, $17,200 for two units, and $25,200 for three units. Tesla recently resumed accepting orders for Powerwall without requiring a simultaneous solar purchase.

With these anticipated design, performance, and installation upgrades, Powerwall 3 is set to reaffirm Tesla's dominance in the residential energy storage market. As the company continues to innovate and evolve its products, customers can look forward to even more efficient and user-friendly energy solutions.

Tesla appears to be set to roll out the new Tesla Model 3 for the North American market after sighting several refreshed versions, also known as Highland, at the Fremont factory. The vehicle successfully debuted in other global markets late last year, including Europe, China, and parts of the Asia-Pacific region.

Tesla may announce the start of Model 3 Highland deliveries as early as this month because the company’s Q4 and Full Year 2023 earnings call is on January 24th. That would provide an ideal platform for the official announcement and garner a lot of attention.

Sightings and Speculations

Before the dawn of 2024, the Model 3 Highland was seen multiple times across the U.S., as posted on Reddit. This further fueled speculation about its North American debut. Tesla owner Matthew Donegan-Ryan shared photos of a Model 3 Highland at the Fremont Factory, featuring Shanghai badges but a VIN indicating Californian manufacture. These sightings suggest that Tesla is preparing for the North American market and potentially for other markets.

Tesla's Model 3 Highland has already made waves in markets like China, Australia, New Zealand, parts of Europe, and the United Arab Emirates since its launch in August 2023. However, it was conspicuously absent in the North American market. While the company did go over its expected deliveries in 2023, there’s no doubt that many buyers are waiting for the latest design and technology that the refreshed Model 3 offers.

Performance Model

The performance variant of the Model 3 Highland has yet to be revealed, but rumors suggest that production has also started on this variant. It’s possible that it may even debut in North America first. The performance trim level is expected more unique than it was in its previous incarnation, with reports saying it’ll be “pretty special.” Instead of just including binned motors and an improved suspension and brakes, the new performance model is expected to stand out against its Long Range counterpart. Tesla is also expected to launch the new Model 3 in North America with a front bumper camera like the Cybertruck.

Model 3 Advancements

Cybertruck has been stealing all the headlines in North America for several months; you may need a refresher of everything the refreshed Model 3 offers. The range has increased by 11 to 12 percent, which equates to the rear-wheel drive getting 346 miles (554 kilometers) and the dual motor long-range getting 423 miles (678 kilometers). This is thanks to several things, including the lighter Model 3, now the most aerodynamic Tesla in the lineup at a stunning 0.219 drag coefficient down from 0.225.

The upgraded suspension provides a more premium ride with new springs & dampers, new geometry on the front suspension, new bushings, and a new way to mount the subframe to the chassis. Moreover, the tires now have more cushioning for an improved ride.

Tesla has made a 30% decrease in wind and ambient noise, a 25% improvement in impact noise, and a 20% improvement in road noise. This has been achieved by using acoustic glass on the rear and back windows (it was only on the front windows before), resulting in "360º acoustic glass". Additionally, more sound insulation has been added for a quieter ride. However, you won’t be able to hear the silent thanks to the new 17-speaker sound system, up from 14 speakers -- complete with two subwoofers and two amplifiers.

The list is endless. The introduction of the U.S.-spec Model 3 Highland couldn't be more timely, especially considering the current list of EVs eligible for the $7,500 tax credit. With the non-facelifted Model 3 and Model Y variants already enjoying this benefit, the arrival of the Model 3 Highland is poised to impact Tesla's market presence and consumer choices significantly.

The Tesla Supercharger V4 network was met with disappointment from a Tesla fan and Model 3 owner. @RoamingNorway posted on X several issues with the new chargers. These included heavier cables, reduced flexibility, a problematic grip causing the plug to fall, and an obstructive design. Despite a modest following, his observations resonated with the Tesla community and caught the company's attention.

The Reviews are In

After the post, @RoamingNorway was met with the usual pro-Tesla crowd and the anti-Tesla hater responses. The user politely answered several comments and displayed their admiration for the EV revolution. Then, the big one, Tesla acknowledged these concerns through its official charging account.

Tesla's V4 Supercharger, an update over its predecessors, initially aimed to cater to a broader range of EVs by including a longer, more durable cable. However, this design adjustment inadvertently introduced challenges for Tesla drivers, as highlighted by the feedback. Tesla's acknowledgment and swift commitment to address these issues reflect the company's agility and customer-centric approach.

While Tesla has not specified the details or timeline for the improvements, their proactive stance suggests these enhancements will be implemented effectively. This development aligns with Tesla's ongoing efforts to expand and refine its charging infrastructure.

The expansion of Tesla's V4 Supercharger network in Europe includes new installations and upgrades from older versions. This expansion is part of Tesla's broader strategy to accommodate an increasing variety of electric vehicles following major automakers' widespread adoption of Tesla’s charging technology. This move grants access to Tesla's extensive Supercharger network of more than 50,000 globally.

Owners Have a Voice

Tesla's approach to customer feedback, exemplified by its response to @RoamingNorway's post, is the latest demonstration of listening to user experience to identify areas of improvement. While the company usually picks off random posts, it opened up the floor last May. Tesla asked what it could improve in a post that garnered more than 9 million views and 13 thousand responses. Interestingly, many of the top suggestions have been addressed, and several more have likely been implemented during an over-the-air update.

For example, customers emphasized the need for faster service times and more service locations. Tesla is continuously building more brick-and-mortar locations to address the growing demand for service. There was also a call to make Full Self-Driving (FSD) transferable. You may recall there was a window to make this happen over the past year. Owners wanted a 360° bird's eye view; Tesla has done better than that with the new High-fidelity Park Assist. There was also a request for a better referral program, and there have been several additions since May.

Tesla is following a proven strategy. Time and time again, the businesses that listen to customers often succeed. We might not be used to a car company listening and implementing changes as quickly as Tesla.
