Winter can’t seem to make up its mind this year in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Regardless, this free crochet pattern for the Midwinter Blanket is sure to make the coldest winter nights more cozy!
Only a few days ago I was bundling up the kids before they headed outside because of a -35 degree Celsius wind chill. Today we were splashing through puddles and rain outside as the temperatures crept up to a near balmy 4 degrees Celsius! Tomorrow we will be bundled up again bracing the wind and snow. See what I mean? Winter just can’t make up it’s mind!
Bulky Weight Yarn:
As the midwinter settles in every, year I find myself gravitating to bulkier weight, soft and cozy, wool blend yarns such at the Wool-Ease Thick and Quick by Lion Brand. I love its texture, is softness and the array of colours.

The Blanket:
For my blanket this year I selected a timeless colour. The clean lines and subtle texture of this blanket give it a modern look. I am in love with fringe and tassels at the moment when it comes to my throw blankets around the home. But the fringe that I have added here to mine is completely optional.
Skill Level:
This is an easy level blanket. It only features two stitches (a half double crochet and a slip stitch) and it is worked as one piece. It uses seven bonus bundles of the Lion Brand Thick and Quick and then an eighth ball if you choose to add the fringe.
Doesn’t it just look so cozy?

The Pattern:
Skill Level: Easy
Gauge: 10 sts x 11 rows of pattern = 4 inches
Finished Size: 50 x 54 inches
Yarn: 8 balls Wool-Ease® Thick & Quick® by Lion Brand® (80% Acrylic, 20% Wool; 12 oz, 340 g; Approx. 223 yds, 204 m). Super Bulky (6). Colour: Fisherman. One ball is dedicated to the fringe.

Hook: Size N/P (10 mm) Hook. Adjust hook size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.
Notions: Yarn Needle.
Optional: Add fringe or tassels to the shorter ends.
Stitches and Abbreviations:
Blo – Back Loop Only
Ch – Chain
Hdc – Half Double Crochet
Rpt – Repeat
Sk – Skip
Sl St – Slip Stitch
Yo – Yarn Over
Pattern Notes:
– Pattern is written in American English terms.
– Pattern is worked in row
– Do not turn unless stated otherwise.
– Ch 1 at the beginning of the row does not count as a st.
– Weave in ends as needed.
The Midwinter Blanket:
Ch 120.
Row 1: Hdc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; ch 1, Turn. (119 sts)
Rows 2-4: Working in the blo, sl st in each st across; ch 1, turn. (119 sts)
Row 5: Working in the blo, hdc in the first st and in each st across; ch 1, turn. (119 sts)
Repeat rows 2-5 until work from the beginning measures approximately 54 inches (or desired length!) and fasten off, weave in ends.
Optional – Cut lengths of yarn approximately 13 inches long and use to create a fringe. For my fringe, I used two-three pieces of yarn per tassel and spaced them skipping one st in between each.
