HS Track Meet Entries - Milesplit vs Baumspage (2024)

We host an invitational. Our AD just emailed us "In talking with the timing company for our invite, we are going to use Ohio Mile Split since most schools/meets are starting to go there instead of baumspage. I got access to our team account last week and we’ll look to use it for all meets going forward to make it easier on everyone."

Do any coaches here have experience entering meet lineups using milesplit vs baumspage?

Where did he get the line "most schools are starting to go there instead of baumspage"?

Anecdotally, fewer and fewer meets are using Baumspage. As far as I know it is still going to be the entry system for the post season, but otherwise I don't think we have any baumspage meets any more. Here in Central Ohio, athletic.net tends to be the preferred method for entering meets. Both as a coach, and as someone who teachers computer programming, I generally prefer it to both Milesplit and Baumspage for meet entries and for keeping track of results.

Seems like pretty much everything is pushed through Milesplit now. I find it much more user friendly than Baumspage.

Overall, I thought the nicest interface was the system finishtiming was using right before they jumped on the milesplit bandwagon. Milesplit is ok, but I find myself clicking back and forth between screens a lot.

My guess is that Baumspage will become a very minor player within the next 5 years for T&F related stuff. I do hope it stays around, though, as it is good for looking back historically to 2001.

Milesplit is free and has some amazing stats that pop up during meets if you have live results. It automatically indicates if the result is a PR, State top 10, National top 50, etc. You can click on any athlete in the live results and it takes you to their data in the milesplit database. I think if coaches, athletes, and spectators learn about this it will make the sport better. Knowing a kid finished 13th in the 3200 in 11:13 doesn't mean much but if you see it's a PR and click on the result and find out it's a PR by 30 sec it makes it a bit more meaningful. I enjoyed having the live results during our indoor meets.

I'm partial to baumspage, but potentially, this could be a good thing. Perhaps Milesplit can become a tool to eliminate the practice of coaches overzealously seeding their athletes in order to gain some type of favorable heat or lane assignment for district prelims. That practice is becoming rarer, but it still happens on occasion.

I just noticed that baumspage is currently showing no links to the district meets. The problem there is if you click on any year in the district column other than 2021, it directs you to use the district meet link for the site that you want to view. If you want to look at district meet results from 2012-2019, you'll have to play around with some URLs. I didn't look at the link to archived results to see if the material from before 2012 is still accessible.

Yes, Baumspage still has the links to the district/regional/state meets back to 2001. However, a few of them are broken links. Some are fixable by tweaking the #s in the URL bar, however. Some are not.

Seems MileSplit is not automatically pulling in results from Baumspage this year. This will lead to a lot less data and possiblely some athletics best performance will not being used for seeding at district meets?

They never automatically pulled them. It takes a person to go find them and add them to the system. It used to take a week or so for that process to start. So I am guessing they just have not starting pulling them as it is easier to do them in groups.
If anyone has results from a meet they want added to milesplit all they have to do is send the results (preferred in html file from hytek) to
Results@milesplit.com
They will then create the meet on milesplit and add the results to it and add to the rankings.

Where do you look for the Jr High top 50 performers now? They talk about milesplit on the Ohsaa site but the link goes to baumspage?

So now I have to pay to see how my kids are ranked in their events. What a bunch of BS especially for how Jr High state meet is done with top 24 in the state being invited.

I agree. OHSAA should provide for a mechanism without having to subscribe to another service. However, OHSAA is notorious for various reasons.

Don't really care what we use to enter, but I'm really tired of coaches putting in made up- unrealistic seed times. Does that happen with Milesplit Entries? One of the beautiful things about track and field is the clock doesn't lie. The tape Doesn't lie. Your kids are not more important than mine and mine aren't more important than yours. Don't screw my kids out of getting in the correct heat / section of a race by making stuff up. Putting in what you think a kid might be able to run at some point in their life, really is not how it should work. Why is there such a fall off from the middle of April to the first Saturday in June!

All of us that've been around this sport for decades have seen the unfortunate false seeding times entered by some coaches. Some are based on previous season's bests, some are based on relay splits, and some are just plain b.s. Regardless, coaches who do so not only hurt other athletes & their support systems, but also their own kids and especially their own reputations. I feel for you and others on this one, Pyscho_Dad.

False performances are one of the reasons that statisticians like myself, Lancermania, and some others on here are so strict when it comes to documenting performances for historical purposes. I still come across obviously bad data from time-to-time that even gets soaked up into MileSplit & AthleticNet. I remember I found a girls' indoor triple jump mark sometime in the last couple years in one of

Track & Field News

' publication HS Track that proved to be completely bogus when you looked at the body of that girl's other marks. I contacted Jack Shepard @ T&FN, alerted him to the situation, and he made the correction in his database.
