Greater Manchester boasts several prestigious towns and villages that are renowned for attracting some rather wealthy residents. From Premier League footballers and TV stars to esteemed businessmen and women, certain parts of our region have become hotspots for the rich and famous.

It is therefore no surprise that these areas have the highest house prices across the region thanks to their offering of multi-million pound properties with countless bedrooms and sprawling gardens.

Using Rightmove's latest house price data, here we look at Greater Manchester's most expensive areas to buy a home where you are most likely to bump into a celebrity, footballer or millionaire.

Altrincham

Altrincham in the south of Trafford was established as a market town back in 1290, and still has a popular market there today.

Over the years it has become an affluent part of the region with many impressive million pound homes and a growing number of independent businesses.

It is also home to the beautiful Dunham Massey which features a historic English country house with a deer park and immaculately tended gardens.

Properties in Altrincham sold for an average price of £555,622 over the last year, with the majority of sales being semi-detached homes which sold for around £484,181.

Since 2021, house prices in Altrincham have gone up by 7 per cent and are 18 per cent up on the peak of £472,306 in 2019.

Bowdon

With its leafy avenues, multi-million pound mansions and celebrity residents, Bowdon in Trafford is currently the most expensive area to live in the whole of Greater Manchester.

Over the last year, homes in Bowdon sold for an average price of £865,579, with detached properties selling for a staggering £1,475,519 and terraced homes fetching £639,608.

Property prices in Bowdon have gone up by a huge 26 per cent since last year and unless you have a six-figure salary, buying a home in the esteemed village is simply unaffordable.

"Many of our clients are entrepreneurs; shareholders in family run businesses; medics; lawyers and those with large property portfolios, there are also some footballers and celebrities," says Jennifer Jameson, managing director of independent estate agents Jameson and Partners.

Within close distance of United's Carrington training ground and Old Trafford, many Manchester United players are known to reside in the sought-after village.

Marcus Rashford owns a £1.85 million six-bedroom house in Bowdon, which he bought in 2017, while the leafy suburb has also been home to United keeper David De Gea.

Harry Maguire and fiancée Fern Hawkins also reportedly live in a new £4m 'dream home' in Bowdon, according to the Mirror, which boasts four bedrooms, a giant balcony, gated driveway and a home cinema

Bramhall

Bramhall in Stockport is one of the region's most desirable neighbourhoods with its stunning mansions and grand countryside estates.

Over the last year, homes in Bramhall sold for around £457,694, with the majority of sales being detached properties selling for an average price of £643,592.

The suburban area was once famously once home to Manchester United legend George Best, and the village centre is known for its a bustling bar and restaurant scene as well as quirky independent shops.

Manchester City player Phil Foden, who grew up in Edgeley, moved his family to a mansion in Bramhall two years ago, where he now lives with girlfriend Rebecca Cooke and their two children.

Didsbury

Didsbury is a prestigious area known for its expensive and large properties that are home to the likes of judges and surgeons.

The village itself is composed of high-end food shops, many chain restaurants and small supermarket branches.

Properties in Didsbury sold for an overall average price of £396,768 over the last year, with semi-detached properties selling for an average of £497,387 and terraced properties fetching £391,376.

House prices in Didsbury over the last year were 4 per cent up on the previous year and 9 per cent higher than the 2018 peak of £362,396.

Hale and Hale Barns

Hale is a very affluent area in the south of Trafford, and together with Hale Barns, it is one of the wealthiest areas in the country

There are a large number of upmarket restaurants and bars in the centre, as well as a bowling green.

The sought-after village of Hale is another area where Manchester United footballers are known to reside.

Luke Shaw set up home in Hale when he initially made the move north from Southampton, residing in a plush £2.8million pad, whilst former Manchester United and England star Phil Neville sold his £5.25m six-bedroom residence in the village last spring.

Over the last year, homes in Hale sold for an average price of £779,873, with the majority of sales being detached properties bought for around £1,398,795.

Overall, sold prices in Hale over the last year were 17% up on the previous year and 20% up on the 2019 peak of £651,701.

In nearby Hale Barns, the average price of a home was a whopping £1,370,300 over the last year, with sold prices in the village 68 per cent higher than the previous year.
