These Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars have only four ingredients, are no-bake, gluten-free and low-FODMAP. I’ve also included a vegan option for this recipe.
I think peanut butter-chocolate is one of my favorite flavor combinations. OK, well, it’s probably a tie between that and mint-chocolate. Either way, chocolate is the common denominator. I especially love dark chocolate. Luckily, it is also low in FODMAPs, along with the other ingredients in these bars.
Developing the Recipe
Maybe you are familiar with a recipe for homemade peanut butter bars that taste just like a Reese’s peanut butter cup. It features crushed up graham crackers to make the consistency like a real peanut butter cup. I figured out that if you use a natural peanut butter (one that contains only two ingredients – peanuts and salt), you can get that same grainy texture, but without using the crushed up crackers!
I played around with the proportions of the butters and sugar and came up with this recipe that has only four ingredients. Plus the decadence of dark chocolate. I have included a way to make these vegan by replacing the butter with coconut oil. The coconut oil makes the consistency of the peanut butter mixture a lot thinner, so the preparation is a bit different. The peanut butter layer has to be refrigerated until firm before adding the chocolate layer.
These bars are easy to make, gluten-free, wheat-free, and of course, delicious! I hope you like these Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Bars as much as I do (which is a lot)!

Prep Time 15 minutes minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes minutes
Chilling Time 2 hours hours
Total Time 20 minutes minutes
Servings 16 bars
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter (see note below for vegan option)
- 1 cup natural creamy peanut butter (I use Smucker’s)
- 1 cup confectioners’ sugar
- 3/4 cup dairy-free dark chocolate morsels (I use Enjoy Life)
- 2 tablespoons natural creamy peanut butter
Instructions
Line an 8″ square pan with aluminum foil and coat lightly with cooking spray.
In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in 1 cup natural creamy peanut butter. Stir until smooth. Add the confectioners’ sugar and stir until fully incorporated. Spread evenly in the bottom of the prepared pan.
In a small saucepan, melt the dark chocolate morsels and remaining 2 tablespoons peanut butter together over low heat, stirring until chocolate is just melted. Drizzle evenly over top of peanut butter layer then carefully spread out with a spatula.
Chill in the refrigerator until set, about 2 hours. Lift bars out the pan using the foil. Cut into bars and serve. These keep best stored in the fridge.
Notes
To make these vegan, replace the 1/2 cup butter with 1/2 cup virgin coconut oil. The peanut butter mixture will be considerably thinner, so wait until chilled solid before adding the the chocolate layer: Pour the peanut butter mixture in the bottom of the prepared pan and refrigerate until solid, about 1 1/2 hours. Make the chocolate layer as stated above and spread over the top of the chilled peanut butter mixture. Refrigerate another 30 minutes, or until set.

Wow — It has been YEARS since I've encountered a web site that has such intrusive pop-up ads. The Home Depot one pops up every few seconds — and I've clicked through and watched it in the hopes that that would support this site and, of course, so that the ad would quit popping up every few seconds (only when I'm scrolling). Looks like really great recipes, but it's way too annoying.

I think they will probably keep about a week, maybe longer if refrigerated.

These are the bomb! Thanks so much! Have you ever tried adding gluten free Rice Krispies to these? I’m going to add about a cup to the peanut butter mix, so will let you know how they turn out. 🙂-

Yes! You can try using vegan margarine, such as Earth Balance.

I used vegan becel margarine, but I would definitely still let the peanut butter layer firm up a bit first. My chocolate ended up spreading into the peanut butter.

I made these without butter … just 3 ingredients and they came out so peanut buttery amazing! You just have to melt the peanut butter, remove from heat and stir in confectioners sugar ( a little harder to mix). And add melted chocolate and they were amazing!-

I made the graham cracker version for years. So good to know it’s possible without them. We now have a peanut/nut allergy in the family. Do you think it would work with sun butter?
