If you are looking for the best smoothie you will ever drink (and I do not say that lightly), then look no further because my friends, this is IT! My Copycat Erewhon Maca Bomb Smoothie is my twist on the Los Angeles health store classic drink, but made at home for a fraction of the price! If you’ve been wanting to try Erewhon’s infamous smoothies, but live outside of LA, then this is the recipe for YOU.

If you’ve ever been to LA without going to Erewhon, then my friends, you are truly missing out. In case you aren’t familiar with the infamous LA health store chain, Erewhon is the grocery store to rule all grocery stores. You can truly find every health food product you could ever want there, and don’t even get me started on their hot bar. Is it overhyped? To some, yes. But in my opinion, Erewhon is the real deal.

However, if there’s one downside to Erewhon, it’s that it’s expensive. Like, really expensive. My favorite smoothie of theirs, the Maca Bomb smoothie, typically runs for about $17, which is quite expensive for a smoothie. Needless to say, an Erewhon smoothie isn’t necessarily an everyday purchase, unless you are a celebrity. And that’s why I’m here to help.

My Maca Bomb Smoothie is a copycat version of the Erewhon classic, but costs a fraction of the price. The ingredients are exactly the same, too, which means you can get all of the benefits of this nutritious smoothie without the Erewhon markup!

What You Need to Make This Delicious, Flavorful Smoothie

You only need less than 10 simple and easy ingredients to throw this smoothie together!

  • Banana: The base of this smoothie consists of bananas, and to achieve Erewhon’s signature thick smoothie texture, you’ll want to use frozen bananas. Whenever I buy bananas I immediately peel them, slice them in half, and store them in the freezer, so that I always have frozen bananas ready for my morning smoothies!
  • Dates: Dates are not only a superfood, but they also add the perfect amount of sweetness to this smoothie. Don’t skip these!
  • Frozen Cauliflower: I’ll admit, this is the one ingredient that is NOT in the Erewhon version. However, I love adding frozen cauliflower to my smoothies, because it adds an extra serving of veggies without influencing the flavor at all. This is an especially great “hack” if you’re making this smoothie for kids, because they’ll never know there’s cauliflower in it!
  • Hemp Seeds: Hemp seeds are high in plant-based protein and Omega-3’s, and the best part is – you won’t even taste them in this smoothie.
  • Cacao Nibs: Cacao nibs add a delicious, chocolatey flavor that tastes SO good with the banana and dates!
  • Maca Powder: Of course, the star of this smoothie is maca powder! Maca root contains high levels of iron and iodine, and has been shown to have helpful benefits for women’s hormones. Plus, it has a slightly caramel-y flavor, which tastes delicious in this smoothie!
  • Vanilla Protein Powder: Some vanilla protein powder not only adds a great flavor, but also packs this smoothie with protein to keep you full and satisfied for a while!
  • Almond Butter: Almond butter and banana is one of my favorite combinations.
  • Almond Milk: And, of course, we need some milk to make this smoothie come together! I like almond milk, because it’s what I usually have on hand and it’s also what Erewhon uses as well. But you can use any non-dairy milk in this smoothie!

Looking for an Extra-Sweet Smoothie?

If you like your smoothies on the sweeter side, I recommend adding in a few more dates! As mentioned above, dates are a superfood that is rich in fiber and antioxidants, so there’s no shame in adding in a few more. Just be sure to remove the pits first, so you don’t end up with any chunks in your smoothie!

My favorite dates are by Joolies, and I highly recommend them for fresh, organic, perfectly-ripe dates every time!

The Best Plant-Based Protein Powder

When it comes to plant-based protein powders, there are so many different ones on the market. In this recipe, we’re using a vanilla protein powder, and if you’re looking for a recommendation, then these are the ones that I recommend.

The first recommendation that I have is Ritual’s Essential Daily Shake, which is the protein powder that I personally love and use every single day. It is not gritty, is full of amino acids, and has a subtle vanilla flavor that tastes great in any smoothie. I highly recommend this one.

However, if you want your smoothie to be an exact Erewhon replica, then Mikuna Foods Vanilla Superfood Protein powder is the one you’ll want to use. It’s what they use in all of their smoothies, and is full of healthy, plant-based ingredients!
