The fate of Scout Motors' US debut hangs in the balance! Is this electric vehicle startup in trouble?
Update: February 18, 2026 - Scout Motors is playing it cool, stating they're still on track for a 2027 production start. But is that the whole story? Sources suggest otherwise.
Amidst rumors of delays, Scout Motors is determined to stay the course. German publication Der Spiegel (behind a paywall) claims production won't commence until 2028 due to technical challenges and financial commitments. However, Scout stands firm, neither confirming nor denying the postponement.
In a statement to The Drive, Scout Motors revealed their concept vehicles are geared towards initial production in 2027, with customer deliveries to follow. They plan to produce validation vehicles in 2026, maturing the process into 2027. But here's where it gets controversial: the company's electric revival seems to be shifting gears.
Scout Motors, once envisioned as an all-electric SUV brand, is now expected to offer mostly range-extended models with onboard gasoline generators. This shift is attributed to political and economic factors. The company's choice of an American production site, influenced by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, adds an intriguing twist, especially since the Act was repealed in 2025.
As a VW Group subsidiary, Scout Motors enjoys a unique position, operating more like a startup than a traditional automaker. This is VW's third attempt to establish a production base in the US, following the decade-long Westmoreland plant and the highly successful Chattanooga facility.
Construction on the South Carolina facility began in 2024, with significant progress made in 2025, but there's still a long road ahead.
