A small group of users of the Toveedo kids app received unexpected push notifications over Shabbos due to what the company described as an incident involving a third-party provider.
Following Shabbos, some users of the app received a notification which had the photo of a person wearing what appeared to be Hamas face covering and the name Seriyyetul Kassam, and which sent out anti Israel messages.
In an email sent to subscribers, Chaim Hershkowitz, founder of Toveedo, explained that the issue was detected quickly and that immediate steps were taken to halt the unauthorized activity. “We immediately blocked this activity and manually blocked the service from sending additional notifications,” the message stated.
Hershkowitz reassured users that no sensitive data was compromised, writing, “At this time, we can confirm that no customer accounts, payment information, or personal data have been breached.”
In a comment to COLlive, Hershkowitz elaborated that the hack happened with “A third party push notification service. They never had access to anything other than the push notification, and it led to an Instagram hacking group. But we fixed it right away. So most people, by the time they opened their phone after Shabbos, did not get linked to that.”
Toveedo has launched an internal investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident and said it will provide further updates once more details are available.
“We sincerely apologize for the disruption and appreciate your trust and partnership as we resolve this matter,” the company added.
