By the 1980s, King had already made a name for himself as a horror novelist, but he decided to step away from the genre and revisit some old novellas. These stories, collected in "Different Seasons," would later become major motion pictures, including one that every studio turned down... only to become a timeless classic.
The collection's gimmick is that each story represents a season, with titles like "Hope Springs Eternal" and "A Winter's Tale." Three of the four novellas were adapted into films, but it's the fourth, "The Body," that has an intriguing backstory. This coming-of-age tale, which became "Stand By Me," was initially rejected by every studio.
But here's where it gets controversial: why did studios pass on a story that is now considered one of the best coming-of-age films ever made? Set in 1959, "Stand By Me" follows four pre-teen boys on a journey to find a dead body. Along the way, they encounter various challenges, but the heart of the film lies in the complex dynamics between these boys and the awareness of their own mortality.
Co-writer Bruce A. Evans revealed that the initial consensus was that no one would be interested in a story about four young boys. It was deemed "dark" and "unsellable" because it didn't fit the usual coming-of-age narrative. But Evans and his co-writer, Raynold Gideon, saw the potential, and so did Embassy Pictures, a smaller studio.
Embassy took a chance on "The Body," and it paid off. Rob Reiner, known for his sitcom role, directed the film, and it became a critical and commercial success. It even received an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
