Main Ingredients Needed

This is an overview of the ingredients and instructions. Be sure to see the recipe card below for exact quantities, detailed instructions and special notes.

  • Puff Pastry - you can find puff pastry in the freezer section of your grocery store.
  • Nutella Hazelnut Spread - be careful not to spread too much so it doesn't seep out when you slice and twist the branches of the tree.
  • Egg - brush this on right before baking to give the pastry a beautiful golden color.
  • Powdered Sugar - sprinkled on top after baking.

Step-by-Step Directions

  • Step 1: Preheat the oven to 375°F degrees.
  • Step 2: Sprinkle a little flour on top of a sheet of parchment paper. Unfold one sheet of puff pastry on top of the parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, gently roll out the puff pastry sheet into an 11 X 13 inch rectangle. Gently lift the parchment paper and transfer to a baking sheet.
  • Step 3: Spread the Nutella hazelnut spread on top of the puff pastry sheet being careful not to go too close to the edge.
  • Step 4: Unfold the second sheet of puff pastry and place on a lightly floured surface. Roll it out also into an 11 X 13 inch rectangle.
  • Step 5: Gently place the second sheet of puff pastry on top of the first sheet of puff pastry that has the Nutella spread. Press gently to seal the two sheets together.

📌Quick Tip: Remember, don't spread too much Nutella on top of the bottom layer of the puff pastry dough. If you do, it might be too difficult to twist and shape the tree branches.

How to Cut Puff Pastry Dough

  • Using a piece of printer paper or parchment paper, cut out a Christmas tree shape to use as a template.
  • Place the Christmas tree template on top of the puff pastry and using a pizza cutter or a sharp knife, cut out the Christmas tree shape. Reserve the extra pieces.
  • Place a ruler down the center of the puff pastry Christmas tree to use as a guide.
  • Starting on one side, make horizontal slices into the sides of the Christmas tree triangle being careful to stop before you reach the center.
  • Repeat the same process on the other side of the Christmas tree triangle; again being careful to stop before reaching the center. You want to leave a 1 to 2 inch section down the middle of the tree that is not sliced.

How to Twist the Branches

  • Starting at the bottom, twist the branches away from you. Press the edge of the branch firmly into the parchment paper to keep the branch from untwisting.
  • Continue twisting the branches moving up the tree and then move on to the other side and twist those branches as well.
  • With the excess puff pastry, use a star cookie cutter and make a star for the top of the tree.
  • Then cut a little piece of dough to make the "stump" of the tree.
  • You can roll the rest of the excess puff pastry into crescent rolls and bake alongside the tree.

Recipe Variations

  • Savory Dip- spread spinach dip in place of the Nutella spread for a savory appetizer.
  • Jam - use your favorite jam on top of the puff pastry sheet!
  • Pizza Sauce - add pizza sauce for a kid-friendly version of the recipe.
  • See this savory recipe on my website with my Christmas Tree Puff Pastry Appetizer.

Puff Pastry Storage Tips

  • Store any leftovers in an air-tight container either in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • I do not recommend freezing any leftovers.
  • You could reheat the leftovers in the microwave for about 15 seconds which will warm up the puff pastry nicely.

Puff Pastry Top Tip

  • My biggest tip for preparing this recipe is to make a Christmas tree template out of parchment paper.
  • You can wipe off the parchment paper and save it from year to year.
  • I've had my template for 4 years now.
