How to Spanish (2024)

Anonymous:Is there any difference between guapo, bonito, precioso and lindo? Which one is more 'intense'?

I don’t really consider there to be too much of a difference, except in cases when you’d use it. Or… in front of whom you’d say each one.

  • Guapo/a means “good-looking” but sometimes gets translated as “hot”. For meguapo/a is more informal, used among friends or people who are close enough to merit it.
  • Bonito/a means “pretty” or “cute”, but it’s also very common to hearbonito/a used for articles of clothing, animals, cars, items etc. When it refers to a person, it’s kind of like “pleasing to the eye”, so less intense.
  • Precioso/a is often translated as “cute” because it’s very common to refer to cute babies asprecioso/a or when referring to little girls aspreciosa. When it’s an adult,precioso/ais more likely to be used for a woman. You can useprecioso/a as “darling” as well.
  • Lindo/a is used very much likebonito/a. It’s also used to mean “neat” or used for things that are pleasing to the eye. It’s used like… “pretty” for mildly attractive, not so intense in romantic feelings.

The most intense ones are…

  • Hermoso/a meaning “beautiful”; it can apply to men and women equally, though men might get the adjectiveapuesto because it means “handsome”.Hermoso/a is very intense and love-related, not specifically romantic, but it can also mean familial love involved. Sometimes it gets translated as “gorgeous”.
  • Bello/a meaning “beautiful” in a very, very strong sense. It’s a very literary word, not so common in spoken Spanish unless it’s meant to be very intense.Bello/a is the most intense in terms of connotation.
