Maybe you haven't heard of donair sauce before – that's ok – I forgive you! 😉 lol

Donair sauce is a popular deliciously creamy and sweet garlic sauce that many East Coast Canadians like to use as a dip for cheesy garlic fingers (like garlic bread) or on our famous Donairs.

For those of you who don't know, a donair is a type of meat wrap that is popular in the Maritime provinces of Canada. The wrap is traditionally made with donair meat (a spiced ground beef), tomatoes, onions, and donair sauce all wrapped up in a pita.

Previously, I shared with you how to make The Famous Atlantic Canadian “Halifax Donair” and so today, I give you the awesome recipe for the special sauce that goes with it. 🙂

I grew up an East Coaster in New Brunswick and I remember eating many many donairs as a kid. Now that I live in Toronto it's very difficult to find a proper donair so I'm so happy to be able to make them at home!

This sauce is soooo good and it's pretty easy to make. I hope you enjoy it!

What is donair sauce made of?

Donair sauce is made from a combination of sweetened condensed milk, garlic powder and vinegar.

There are other versions of donair sauce that use evaporated milk instead of sweetened condensed milk – I'm testing out this variation of the recipe, and once it's perfect, I'll add the details here. 🙂

Is there a difference between donair and shawarma sauce?

Yes, they're completely different as donair sauce is made with sweetened condensed milk, and shawarma sauce does not have any dairy in it. Shawarma sauce is typically made from lemon juice, garlic, and other spices.

Be sure to see the recipe card at the bottom of the post for full ingredients & instructions!

How to make Donair Sauce

Making the sauce is super easy! All you have to do is combine the ingredients by hand using a fork or electric mixer. As you mix the ingredients, the sauce will thicken. That's it!

The hardest part about making this sauce is waiting for it to chill in the fridge before you can eat it. I always make a double batch so that I can have some right away and some for later. 😉

Can I add more garlic to the donair sauce?

Of course! If you want a more garlicky flavour, simply add more garlic powder to taste. 🙂

How long is Donair Sauce good for?

Homemade doniar sauce will last at least a month when stored in an air tight container in the fridge. It takes a long long time before it will spoil, and typically gets used up before it gets to that point anyways!

We rarely have leftover donair sauce in this house! haha It's sooooo yummy!

Can I freeze donair sauce?

In theory, you could freeze donair sauce, however as it's made with dairy, it may separate and become watery when thawed. I would recommend making a fresh batch when you're ready to eat it. 🙂

What do you eat with Donair Sauce?

Donair sauce is great with so many different things! Here are some ideas:

  • most commonly used onThe Famous Atlantic Canadian “Halifax Donair”
  • dip for garlic cheese fingers (recipe coming soon!)
  • sauce base for donair pizza
  • on donair subs (made similar to a donair wrap, except the ingredients are topped on toasted sub buns – open faced)
  • dip for fries

It's also really yummy on pizza instead of traditional pizza sauce. Trust me, once you start eating this stuff, you'll find all sorts of delicious ways to enjoy it!

I'll add more uses for donair sauce to this list as I find them/think of them!
