If you’re looking for a Halloween fruit pizza thisDay of the Dead sugar skull fruit pizza is the perfect sweet treat for your Halloween party. With fresh fruit and with a yogurt-based cream cheese frosting it’s the kind of nutritious Halloween dessert pizza you want your kids to eat!

This fun treat was inspired by the sugar skull designs that are traditional to the celebrations for Day of the Dead in Mexico. And the best part is that this Halloween fruit dessert is so easy to make it is a great Day of the Dead activity for kids.

Halloween is one of our favorite times of the year and we always throw a party for the kids. Our family also celebrates the Day of the Dead on November 1st.

This year we want to share a little bit of our Latino traditions with our friends by throwing a Day of the Dead instead of the traditional Halloween party. For our Day of the Dead party, we wanted to make sure that we included some healthier and nutritious options that the kids would love.

We started off by creating a Day of the Dead sugar skull fruit pizza. It’s a usual Halloween recipe but it’s so easy to make that I always make it for my kids with their favorite Yorkshire Pudding. Not only is this delicious Halloween treat loaded with fresh fruit but we also tweaked the cookie and frosting recipes to create a recipe with less sugar and more protein. To accomplish this we reduced the amount of butter in the cookie recipe replacing it for Greek yogurt and created a skinny version of the traditional cream cheese frosting.

Start with lots of fruit, make sure you include fruits of different colors. You can use any fruit you have at home as long as you have a good variety of colors. The idea is to create a vibrant sugar skull (Calavera) design.

Bake a giant cookie and cut it in the shape of a skull. You can either use your own cookie recipe or use store-bought refrigerated cookie dough, which is what I did.

Spread the cream cheese yogurt frosting on the cookie. I didn’t spread it all the way to the edges but instead left a small border around the skull shape without frosting. This will make it easier to eat the sugar skull cookie pizza slices once this treat is cut.

Then finish up by decorating your sugar skull with the fruit. You can make any design you like and get creative with this. Let the kids join in. This was so much fun to make together!

Seeing my kids get excited about eating a Halloween treat that is loaded with fruit and is better for them was awesome. And this looked so beautiful as part of the party decor too!

They loved this so much they wanted to make it again the next week which was just fine with me. So we actually had this twice. The first time we made it for a Halloween party we got invited to and the second time we made it as part of our Dia de los Muertos celebration.

Although this is certainly not a traditional Dia de los Muertos recipe it’s inspired on the traditional sugar skulls. To be totally honest my kids are not huge fans of some of the Mexican traditional recipes like mole so this was a great way for them to get involved in the holiday and enjoy a treat they loved.
