Google No Longer Offers the Google Translate Website Translator (2024)

Google No Longer Offers the Google Translate Website Translator (1)

02/19/2020

On December 4, 2019 Google discontinued its popular Google Translate Widget. The widget can no longer be added to new sites. It is currently still available for websites that already have it installed.

The Google Translate's Website Translator now displays this message:

"We no longerprovide access to Google Translate's Website Translator. This change does not affect existing use of the Website Translator." The service was widely popular with website owners who could enable users to automatically and instantly translate entire websites for free.

Again, the service (as of now) is still available to those who currently have it. For those who don't, the message continues to say, "We encourage users looking to translate webpages to use browsers that support translation natively." Aka, Google Chrome.

This is not the first time Google has discontinued a service that they find to be not profitable or of low quality. Every time the translator loads on a webpage, it uses processing power from Google's servers - which can add up, considering it runs on every page of a website. The Google Chrome browser translator allows the translation of pages without needing to always contact the Google Servers. The widget's translations can also be less than accurate.

Continued use of this service is possible with the Google Translation API Service. The service allows organizations to dynamically translate between languages using Google's pre-trained or custom machine learning models. The pricing is based on character usage.

Another thing to add to the Google cemetary.
