Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has accused the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) of breaching the peace agreement and misusing federal funds for military activities. In a statement made during the second regular session of the House of People's Representatives, Abiy emphasized the need for development over conflict in the Tigray region. He stressed that the government does not want further fighting and that the focus should be on national growth. Abiy also stated that any attempt to overthrow the government by force will fail, reiterating the administration's stance that lasting peace in Tigray requires disarmament, reform, and cooperation. He accused the TPLF of spending federal funds on militants instead of development, highlighting the region's need for progress through peaceful means. Abiy called for the dissolution of the TPLF's illegitimate regional council and administration, formed through unlawful elections, and proposed an inclusive interim administration. He outlined key priorities for peace, including the disarmament of armed groups, the restoration of public services, the return of displaced citizens, and adherence to the constitutional principle that only the federal government can conduct foreign relations. Additionally, Abiy accused the TPLF of contraband arms and unauthorized foreign relations, actions that undermine the peace process. He also addressed calls for the full implementation of the Pretoria peace agreement, noting that some loud voices demanding implementation were not part of the negotiation process. Abiy suggested that the TPLF can restore its legality by re-registering with the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), respecting the Election Board, the constitution, and holding a proper congress to become a legal party.
