What does it mean to clear your credential? ›

The term "Clear" or "Level II" credential signifies that all education and program requirements for the credential have been met.

Dependent clear credentials are normally issued for five years but by statute cannot have an expiration date that exceeds the expiration date of the prerequisite credential.

Can I clear my credential if I am unemployed or a substitute teacher? No. Per recent CTC changes to the induction standards, only employed teachers are eligible for induction.

If requirements for the clear credential are not completed before the expiration of the preliminary, the holder will be unable to teach in California's public schools with that credential until those requirements are met and the document is renewed.

In California, your teaching credential is generally valid for five years from the date of issuance. Once it comes time to renew your license, you will likely receive reminders and instructions about how to go about doing so.
