Get ready for some thrilling news, F1 fans! Barcelona is back on the F1 calendar, and it's a move that's got everyone talking. The city's iconic race will now alternate with Spa-Francorchamps over the next six years, creating an exciting European rotation.
But here's where it gets controversial... Barcelona's existing contract was under immense pressure due to outdated facilities. The city and Catalan government had to step up their game to keep this prestigious event. And they did! By investing in the circuit and creating fan-centric festivals, they've secured their place on the calendar for three out of the next six years.
Meanwhile, Spa-Francorchamps, a legendary track in its own right, will host F1 in 2027, 2029, and 2031. Barcelona will take over in 2028, 30, and 32. This deal might just put an end to Spa's hopes of a full-time return for now, as Belgian promoters had been pushing for a yearly race.
"This renewal is a testament to the power of collaboration," said Pol Gibert, CEO of Circuits de Catalunya SL. "Formula 1 brings an incredible economic impact and helps project Catalonia as a global sporting destination."
And this is the part most people miss... F1 isn't just about the race. It's an economic powerhouse, generating over €300 million per edition. It's a strategic event that puts cities on the map and showcases their ability to host world-class competitions.
"Barcelona is an incredible city, and its fans are passionate," added Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. "We're excited to continue racing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and see how they further enhance the experience for fans and the city alike."
So, what do you think about this new F1 calendar rotation? Do you agree that Barcelona's investment and fan engagement are key factors in its continued presence?
